Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy president, is in pole position to take over from President Jacob Zuma as president of the country, former Sunday Times editor Ray Hartley told the Cape Town Press Club on Thursday 18 September. Pole position refers to motor sports where the driver of the motor vehicle is at the front of the grid in the starting line-up. Ramaphosa, as deputy president of the ANC and deputy president of South Africa, is indeed, in political pole position.
