Erasing the red rhino. Rubbing conservation up the wrong way.
The Red Rhino caught my eye. It was big and red and an eraser – and cheap! For only R26 I had myself a giant Endangered Wildlife pencil rubber. I pushed the Red Rhino across the Exclusive Books counter with the dual smugnesses of a book reader and a wildlife conservationist.
“That’s R92…” said the teller, turning the box the right way round, adding it to my books and drumstick pencils. “R92?” I protested. “Jissus, I can buy my own game farm for that price – with rhinos on it!” It was too late. She had already rung it up. The giant eraser became part of my stationery, accompanied by the philosophy: “It’s an eraser. It must erase.”
