Baubles, bangles and bullying is what you'll find when you scratch the million-dollar facade of Sandton’s glittering Cartier boutique. Its senior staff have been picked off one by one over recent years.
Helen Grange reports that all is not well at the ritzy Cartier boutique in Sandton City, South Africa’s only dedicated store for that famous French luxury goods manufacturer.
Since its top salesman, Bora Said Baysungur, was dismissed in July, 2012, there has been a steady release of staff, including its managing director, Emile Human. And Baysungur believes it’s because he exposed some unholy collusion among top staff who, he believes, were covering up malpractices that had become almost routine.
Flamboyant Turkish manager Baysungur claims he was unfairly fired “because I was questioning what was going on”. He maintains he was also victimised because he is gay. “Human said he would never again hire ‘moffies’ as they were too much trouble,” he says.
