
In April Noseweek reported on the mad scramble to save Johannesburg and its neighbours from the acidic radioactive liquid lurking in abandoned mine shafts that criss-cross the region. With each rainy season the levels rise inexorably and by October the acid mine drainage (AMD) is expected to break surface in the Eastern Basin, near Boksburg.
There was no immediate reaction to the Noseweek story… until, a month later, respected water researcher Dr Anthony Turton put an agitated, profoundly insulting post on Facebook.
