The SA Air Force never wanted the 28 new Gripen fighters that are to be bought from Sweden and Britain as part of the R50 billion-and-growing arms package. The Gripens are too expensive to fly and maintain. Maybe that’s why the Air Force has been forced to put its 21 Mirage F1-AZs - all “in excellent condition” - on the block.
