When a client complained to MTN about his massive bill the company threatened to expose the fact that he had been surfing porn sites. Another MTN client, also receiving an exorbitant bill, tried to query what was downloaded and was it was private and it would be breaching privacy to tell him - never mind that it's his account and he is the one asking. Too bad, it's still private.

I travel overseas a lot and for this reason I never give out my Vodacom cell number to anyone other than family and people I do business with. I never fill it out on forms so I do not understand how I get solicited to join competitions. To unsubscribe I reply with the word "stop" which costs R2. Not only do the unsolicited sms messages cost me money to receive overseas, but Vodacom is making money from the "stop" sms as well. Not only has Vodacom being complicit in allowing use of my cell number, but Cell-C has somehow obtained it as well. Their very rude, coarse and unskilled operators phone me regularly in the middle of the night in Canada offering me Cell-C services. Why Richard Branson implores them to keep doing this when I clearly have a Vodacom contract is beyond my understanding. It is also an endless source of irritation and drives up my cell costs. No wonder the cell phone companies rake in millions in profits. I wish I could find a way to solicit them for business and each time I make R2 automatically, whether successful or not.

Horror stories like these, as well as personal experience from when I administered the business cell accounts for my previous employer, are why I abandoned my own cell contracts. I've stuck to prepaid for the past two years and though it has its inconveniences, I feel a little safer. Unfortunately, prepaid isn't a viable long-term option for some people (especially business people). Icasa and Waspa need to grow backbones and stand up to the cell giants on behalf of the public.

I have had a similar experience with vodacom on my 3G cotract and it seems that these SP. I think what's even more sad is that there's little one can do as a customer. But maybe someone need to explain the role of icasa.

Would the Consumer Protection Act, due to be implemented towards the end of 2010, be the tool to use against the cell-phone companies?

MTN's inability to explain the exorbitant charges and their lame excuse that divulging content downloaded would be a breach of privacy sound like just cause for never signing up for their services. Maybe the need for "privacy" is another way of saying that they have discovered an error on their part and are not prepared to rectify it!!!
