In August 2007 nose94 reported that local chemical and fertiliser distributor Protea, and its listed parent company, Omnia Holdings, knew since at least 2004 that zinc sulphate they were importing from China for agricultural use was seriously contaminated with cadmium – a poisonous heavy metal that accumulates in the soil.

My mistake - none of our pinapples may be exported and two thirds of the workers have lost their jobs.

Still wondering what we are eating though.....

If two thirds of our pineapple production may not be exported, who is eating it - us? Are the pineapples we buy in South Africa contaminated - how can we check?

The other thing is, if Omnia are that negligent, how can we be sure there are not problems with other products of theirs - i.e. is anything that has been grown using Omnia fertilisers safe to eat?
