There truly are two sides to this story: Make no mistake, the HPCSA was definitely overdue for an overhaul. It most certainly was a bunch of foxes who were put in charge of catching chicken thieves. Doctors were automatically NOT GUILTY unless - well, unless the doctors on the disciplinary panel didn't like them. So the new disciplinary panels should only be an improvement (sigh: assuming the laymen, doctors and officials on it are honourable people).

Some of the recent actions by HPCSA and some of its professional boards HAVE been a vast improvement over the "old days" already.

As for the minister appointing ALL BUT ONE? Well, talk about overkill!! Of 13 members, a better balance would surely be something along the lines of 5 chosen by the public (yes! Get the public to nominate their favourite docs!), 4 by the profession and 4 by Minister Garlic or her successor? It is BALANCE that's being sought, right?
