Part of what makes the Richard Benson saga so compelling is that it starts with a display of moral courage. As a stockbroker in the late 60’s, Benson was unwilling to stand by and watch as hundreds of thousands of small investors lost their savings in a stock exchange swindle that enriched some of Johannesburg’s wealthiest and supposedly most respectable businessmen. The legal action Benson initiated on behalf of those investors led to much of his subsequent legal nightmare.

But key witnesses, including SA rugby boss Brian van Rooyen, seem to have lost their memories.

Anglo American's platinum king Barry Davison oversaw a deal in which Amplats parted with mining rights worth close on R900m - for just R24m. The beneficiaries of this little windfall were the shareholders of a Canadian company with three South African directors. Who were those shareholders? We don't know. But we do know that one of the directors – the company president – happens to be the friend, mentor and former attorney partner of Barry's new bokkie Amanda Scheepers. And that the deal went down at a time when the future of the rand - and the country as a whole - looked a lot less rosy than they do today.
