THE LEGEND OF LESLIE

You’ve heard of Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Bles Bridges. How about Michael Saltino? Not? Of course not, says Saltino, the SABC has consistently refused to play his music in spite of his god-given talent. Saltino has achieved cult status among radio Highveld listeners - but is that for being good, or bad?
Whatever the merits of his music, Saltino and his jazz-loving lawyer have managed to give the SABC a bloody nose in court - after the national broadcaster fell for Saltino’s dummy TV-licence challenge.

THE GOOD PRIEST AND THE BAD IDEA

Some astonishingly brazen claims from a fund-raising priest who works with people living with HIV/Aids. They don’t call it the “aids industry” for nothing.

CHRISTO WIESE GOES UNDERGROUND AT CLIFTON

At Clifton we find ex-BoE boss Christo Wiese going underground a stone’s throw from the Atlantic - and running rings around the rules. Things have been a little tough for our Christo recently. But not so bad, surely, that he needs to build a bunker in the rocks next to Bikini Beach?

NDEBELE’S BUMPY RIDE

Sbu Ndebele is the ANC’s very ambitious KwaZulu Natal leader. But lately he’s been blotting his copybook; first with some not-so-accurate representations to the president, and then with a taxi scheme involving a R300 000 per month consultancy fee for one of his pals, among other financial shenanigans.
Oh what the hell. Its only another few million or so down the drain.

MAP, BLAIR AND MBEKI

Tony Blair gave MAP a big boost when he joined President Mbeki in the publication of a joint manifesto “Comrades in a new struggle”. Dinkum! Clearly Blair is inclined to see Mbeki as a kindred spirit. But even after the concerted efforts of two separate PR companies, hired to boost Mbeki’s image in Britain, one British newspaper described Mbeki as “a man destroying Mandela’s legacy”.
Forget the PR - MAP was supposed to be about effective realistic action directed at solving our problems.

THE QUESTIONS SELBY WON’T BE ASKING

At the arms deal hearings in Pretoria we find the stuff that myths are made of. And an admiral looking good and clean and fresh, except for the brown on his nose. Which prompts us to answer some of the prickly questions that the Public Protector will definitely not be asking. In the process we take a look at the government PR myths surrounding arms deals - and some grim realities.

OLD MUTUAL’S TEFLON MAN

Old Mutual fund manager Alan Greyling has led a charmed life of shady deals and corruption.

OLD MUTUAL, LAURIE KORSTEN & THE GREAT PENSION FUND RIP-OFF

Judging by what Old Mutual’s spokesmen have said and argued in court, the average South African has more reason to fear that Old Mutual will lose his pension and retirement savings – and resist all attempts to have itself held accountable for the loss – than he need fear being held up by armed robbers or car highjackers.

OLD MUTUAL"S CULTURE OF CORRUPTION

Ten years ago Old Mutual was shaken by the discovery of massive share scams involving its investment department and senior portfolio managers. That time outsider Greg Blank was dramatically hauled under the legal spotlight - while the cover-up proceeded apace at Old Mutual.
Now things have once again gone horribly wrong at Mutual Park. (In all probability they were simply never put right.) This time the scandal involves the billions that the insurance giant invests on behalf of the hundreds of pension funds it manages. Once again Mutual executives were confident that they could avoid liability for their poor management, arguing all the way to the Appeal Court that they are not subject to the laws designed to protect pensioners. How so, you ask? Simply because it has for so long not been “practice” at Old Mutual to comply with the law! Indeed.
Join us for a closer look at Old Mutual’s scandals, old and new, and we’ve no doubt you’ll agree: it’s time to go, Mr Levett! Old Mutual needs a leader who appreciates Old Mutual's role in SA's business culture and displays respect for corporate ethics
